The following steps below are general recommendations for a POS installation in a network environment. Naming conventions may vary if needed (i.e. workgroup name). However, passwords and mapped network drives should be consistent on all POS stations. The instructions below reflect a Windows 7 Pro setup. Exact steps may vary depending on your operating system but the concept remains the same.
Windows Installation
Install Win 7/WePOS/POS Ready
Do NOT install any components if asked.
When asked for the station identification, name the machine “station<n>”. Where n is the station number.
Click on Start-> Control Panel > Programs and Features and select “Turn Windows features on or off”
- Disable any unneeded functions (i.e. Games).
- Hit OK but do not restart the computer if asked.
Note: It is recommended that stations be purchased with Win 7 /WePOS/POS Ready preloaded. All POS stations should have anti-virus install and set to auto-update.
Setup Workgroup
Right click on Computer and select Properties
Select change settings
Click on “Change” and do the following
- Verify the computer name
- Set the workgroup to RM
- Then hit OK to exit. Do not reboot.
Setup User Account
Note: User accounts associated with rmwin should not have administrative rights. Do not use the default administrative account for the user. Use should change the default Administrative account and password to something unique, the password should be complex. A separate user account apart from the administrative account with a complex password should used. These same controls should be used on the fileserver.
Click on Start-> Control Panel > User Accounts
Select “Change Your Account Name”
- Enter the new account name
- Click “Change Name" button
- Click “Standard User”
- Click Change Account Type button.
- Enter new password
- Exit from password menu
- Move the slider to the lowest possible setting (Never Notify)
- Click OK
Login without Password
Open the Windows Run menu (press WIN + R on keyboard)
Enter “control userpasswords2” or "netplwix" and click “OK”
Select “posuser” on the User Name list in the User Account window disable the option “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer ” “and press “OK”
Important: At this point you will need to restart the computer.
Map Network Drive
Open Windows Explorer by double clicking on the Computer icon on the Desktop.
Click on Tools menu and select Map Network Drive.
In the Map Network Drive window select the drive letter from the drop down list adjacent to Drive.
Choose F:\ as the network drive. When mapping to the server use the drive letter and the folder, do not use the IP address of the server for mapping.
Click the Browse button and navigate to the rmwin folder on the rmserver
Check the box that reads “Reconnect on logon”.
Press Finish
